Refractor Fist is a Coup de Grâce in the Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai and a recurring skill in the Dragon Quest series. It is primarily used by Maam.
It is a technique that uses Heal spell in a way that mimicks the ancient Overheal spell, which makes heals the target to the point of permanent decay even if the target has regeneration abilities. It could only be used on living creatures.
Description[]
Refractor Fist is a technique created by Brokeena as part of his Warrior Master Style. Refractor Fist is inspired in an unlikely thought, but effective principle, which is to utilize healing magic as a weapon of destruction. Just like excessive medicine can become poison, or too much watering can cause plants to wither, so can healing by large amounts cause damage instead of restoration.
Following after the sages of old who could use a powerful spell known as Overheal in order to fight against monsters. Since Overheal was a spell long lost, it inspired Brokeena to replicate its effects through different means. By employing and reinforcing Midheal in conjunction with martial arts techniques, the otherwise ordinary healing spelling has its power boosted tremendously to the point of reaching the level of Overheal and cause severe damage to its targets.
Refractor Fist has a clear advantage in combat: Because of its healing nature, it is capable of inflicting damage to adversaries despite any potential difference in power between the user and its enemy, therefore allowing its user to overcome and defeat significantly more powerful threats than themselves. Furthermore, this technique can be used to defeat enemies who can regenerate, there by bypassing their ability to survive. It can be combined with any technique of the Warrior Master Style Fighting.[1] There are nonetheless numerous disadvantages to this technique: Because it utilizes healing as a weapon, any enemy that cannot be healed is thus unaffected by it, therefore making it useless against inorganic or undead opponents. Furthermore, because it inflicts damage at the point of impact, Refractor Fist is by proxy a close ranged attack and can be neutralized by incapacitating its user's fists. Zamza successfully achieved this by covering Maam's fists in thick layers of sticky mucus from his mouth.
