Kamikazee is a recurring spell in the Dragon Quest series. Introduced in Dragon Quest II, the spell attempts to destroy all enemies at the cost of the user's own life. A healing variant of the spell was later introduced with the Kerplunk incantation.

Description[]

The spell is often associated with supportive roles. It is also commonly seen on the dreaded rockbomb.

Appearances[]

Dragon Quest II[]

Making its debut, it is learned by the Prince of Cannock at Level 28 and would slay all enemies attacking the party. The caster of the spell would, as the original name implies, also perish along with the enemies. The spell has no resistance tag whatsoever for normal enemies in the game's programming in any version, giving it perfect accuracy against everything but boss monsters. The downside to this is that no experience points or gold are gained after battle. It costs 1 MP to cast, and is also used by Batmandrills and Pazuzu in battle against their enemies.

Dragon Quest III[]

Acquired by those of the Priest and Sage vocations at Level 41, and no longer negates any experience points or gold when cast. It costs 1 MP to cast once again, and is also known by the Rockbombs introduced to the series from this installment. The living landmines are notorious for casting this spell and wiping out whole parties when they are low on HP, so dealing with them swiftly is paramount. It is also used by Imps in battle, though they fail at casting it due to 0 MP.

Dragon Quest IV[]

Kamikazee is activated if someone is wearing a kamikazee bracer upon defeat, but otherwise, no one learns the spell. The scarcity of the effect is balanced by a fantastic range of effectivness, with only the Lost soul, Pocus poppet, Night emperor, Float-o-copier, Sasquash, Prince of darkness, Emperor wyvern, metal slimes, and boss monsters having any resistance at all. It is also used by Rockbombs and Imps once again, though the latter will fail at casting it once again.

Dragon Quest V[]

Learned by Sancho at level 30 and alreadly learned by recruited Rockbombs and Ticking Timeburrms, it acts the same as in previous appearnaces, though the average monster is fully vulnerable to it as well, making the effectiveness of Kamikazee turn into figurative Hail Marys when battles are looking grim. It costs 1 MP to cast once again, and is also used by Ticking timeburrms in battle.

Only the Pink elephant, Blizzybody, Necromancer, Hades helm, Hyperpyrexion, Mandrake marauder, Bomboulder, Moosifer, Balhib, Archdemon, Great dragon, Deathsquad, Mechan-o'-wyrm, Barbatos, Bilhaw, Metal Slimes, and boss monsters have any resistance to the spell at all, less than a tenth of the monster list.

Dragon Quest VI[]

Learned by advancing to Rank 7 of the Sage vocation, Kamikazee no longer has its own resistance tag in the game's programming, using Whack's instead. To double the usual hit race as well, for an accuracy of 100%, 100%, 75%, 0%. It costs 1 MP to cast once again and is also used by Rockbombs once again. It is also already learned by recruited Rockbombs once again, though only in the SNES original.

Dragon Quest VII[]

Learned by advancing to Rank 5 of the Champion vocation (Rank 6 in the 3DS remake), and Rank 6 of the Rockbomb vocation, it acts the same as in VI and costs 1 MP to cast once again, while also being used by Rockbombs in battle once again. In the 3DS remake, it is learned by advaning to Rank 6 of the Pirate vocation and Rank 4 of the Hero vocation.

Dragon Quest VIII[]

Learned by investing 70 points into the Hero's Courage skill tree, it acts the same as in previous appearances and costs 1 MP to cast once again, with the base damage calculated as HPx0.99. It is also used by Imps and Rockbombs once again, though the former will fail at casting it once again.

Dragon Quest IX[]

Kamikazee is learned by paladins at level 33 and acts the same as in previous appearances. It costs 1 MP to cast once again, and is also used by Moai minstrels, as well as Rockbombs once again.

Dragon Quest X[]

An enemy only spell in this entry, it is used by Wimps, Rainbow rocks, and Jiarocks, as well as Rockbombs and Batmandrills once again.

Dragon Quest XI[]

Learned by Rab at level 53, it acts the same as in previous appearances and costs 1 MP to cast for the first time since IX. It is also used by Hard-boiled eggsoskeletons, as well as Rockbombs once again.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Kamikazee is one of the Hero's spells that randomly appear in the Command Select window. The Hero will cross his arms and glow as he begins to charge a massive explosion, dealing great damage (depending how close one is) and knockback to those in range while KOing himself in the process. The spell is best used in team battles or when the opponent has one stock left, provided you have two.

The Adventure of Dai[]

Maintaining its original japanese name in both the original story, and in all of its subsequent adaptations, Megante is a priest-only spell, consuming Life Energy; Avan, Rockbombs and Popp cast it.

Like always, this spell is supposedly fatal to both its target as well as who attempts to cast it. However, ironically, despite being harped time and time again as a deathly dangerous spell, every single time Megante was unleashed as a supposedly trump card, it had one or both of its effects negated in a way or the other:

  • When Avan used it on Hadlar, not only Hadlar was tough enough to survive its blast, but by sheer luck, Avan himself turned out to having survived the explosion, as coincidentally, one of the keepsakes from Flora he was carrying had the ability to shield him from it.
  • When Popp tried to use it against Baran in his Dragonoid form, he, at the last second, accidentally let his grip slip, which allowed Baran to escape the incomplete Megante unharmed. Popp, on the brink of death, survived the explosion for a few more minutes, allowing him, with his sheer force of will, to support Dai in his following confrontation with his father. Impressed, Baran then used his Dragon Knight's blood to revive the now dead Popp, returning him to the land of the living.
  • During his fight against Killvearn, Avan once again tried to use Megante, only for this time, he was stopped, and it was then one of Killvearn's contraptions that attempted to use Megante on Avan; the device exploded as intended, however, Avan once again survived the blast thanks to him being covered with the residual ashes of the now dead Hadlar, as the cells of his Superior Being body emitted Demonic fire energies. This countered both the heat of Megante, and the subsequent Killvearn's fire attacks, allowing Avan to seize victory in their fight.
