Serenica is an important character in Dragon Quest XI. She is one the legendary heroes who, alongside the mage Morcant and the warrior Drustan, aided Erdwin in his quest to defeat Calasmos and save Erdrea. In the present, Both Veronica and Serena are her reincarnations.
Appearance[]
Serenica is a young woman with pink eyes and long, dark-purple hair that is kept in a ponytail. She wears green earrings and upon her hair is a golden circlet with a red gemstone in it. She wears a white surplice with a teal cape around it. She also wears long dull orange boots and gloves; metal bands are also on her arms.
Biography[]
Little is known about Serenica's past or how she ended up joining Morcant and Drustan as a fellow companion of the Luminary Erdwin, but it is clear that she and Erdwin deeply fell in love with each other.
In the aftermath of Erdwin's tragic death, Serenica, Drustan, Elder Eegoltap and the rest of the Watchers, sealed Calasmos in a giant sphere, later known as Erdwin's Lantern. She briefly stayed among the people who had gathered around her, thusly establishing Arboria and the Keepers, but then she took the Sword of Light and sealed it in the heart of Yggdrasil, after which she left on a personal quest alone.
Serenica searched for a way to revive Erdwin, leading her to The Royal Library, where she learned of a hidden tower with the power to turn back time. Serenica ascended the Tower of Lost Time and found the Time's Sphere, but, lacking both a weapon strong enough and the power of the Luminary, she failed to shatter the orb, collapsing from exhaustion. Many Tockles began to surround her, and she was transformed into a giant Tockle-like creature, the Timekeeper. Her transformation wiped her memories as Serenica and she would henceforth serve as the guardian of the Tower of Lost Time.
While not dead, her powers and will would nevertheless reincarnate anew in the twins Veronica and Serena, thusly splitting her might in two people.
As the Timekeeper, she assisted the party by instructing the new Luminary in how to break the Time's Sphere and return to the past, which the young hero promptly decided to do despite the risks in order to prevent the disastrous fall of Yggdrasil.
In the new timeline, after learning of her tragic past, the party returned to the Tower of Lost Time, and asked the Timekeeper how to empower the Calamus flute and Cetacea. Upon seeing the flute, fleeting memories began to resurface in the Timekeeper, making her able to perform alongside Veronica and Serena, the melody necessary for the magic ritual.
After Calasmos was slain once and for all, the party returned once again to the Timekeeper, and the Luminary, using his powers, was able to revert Serenica to her original self; then, he let her briefly borrow the Sword of Light and shared the power of the Luminary with her. Serenica, now able to finally accomplish her goal, personally shattered the Time's Sphere, and travelled to the past, leaving behind the Sword of Light.
She succeded in reuniting with Erdwin, the both of them now having the power of the Luminary; however, it is left unknown in what ways her actions have altered the past events, considering that, seemingly, nothing was different in the present time.
