Special Family refers to a group of monsters that made their debut in Dragon Quest VIII's 3DS version. Their type, much like the ??? Family cannot be determined, some monsters from this family are bosses, though some are monsters with unique designs which only appear after certain conditions are fulfilled.
An example of an enemy would be the Crème caraslime which wasn't in the PS2 version of Dragon Quest VIII and was added to the 3DS version. It only appears after you kill at least 30 slimes in the Farebury Region.
An example of a boss would be Geyzer in Memoriam or Captain Crow in Memoriam , who are stronger versions of the original found in Memories Lane.
