Superior Beings are an artificial race of incredibly powerful beings in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. They are Darklings who were modified with hundreds of monster's traits mixed together through the Superior Being Studies of Zamza and Zaboera.

Profile[]

Superior Beings are a eugenics project developed by the Dark Army's Mystic Legion, and helmed by Zamza the Mystic Scholar, son and lieutenant to the Legion Commander, Mystic Bishop Zaboera.

The project was originally conceived as a means to help fix a significant weakness on the army's spellcasters lack of physical aptitude, by finding ways to enhance performance. Studies soon directed attention into other monsters and their traits where researchers would study and analyze the best characterstics as reference. Soon after the project involved actual genetic studies in which samples of as many as over a hundred of monster traits were gathered, although it is hinted that many more were researched before trimming it down to its current number.

Experimentation on actual Darklings took place with varying degrees of success, but research was still ultimately incomplete and lacking in desired results. Zamza himself underwent the procedure when research was 90% complete. However, a key flaw still remained latent in those transformed; the inability to use spells while in monster form. Although physical performance was vastly improved with regeneration ability and others on top, the prevention of spellcasting nonetheless deemed the project still a failure in terms of its intended goal. Another side-effect of the conversion that couldn't be fixed, was that, should the modified individual be defeated and mortally wounded, no healing would be effective anymore, with their body quickly dissipating into black ash; Zamza speculated that this was retribution from the Gods for toying with the life given by them.

Not intending to sacrifice further of their men for research purposes, Zamza set his goals in using Humans of high aptitude as guinea pigs, while at the same time costing humanity of powerful warriors. With this goal in sight, Zamza passed himself as human and advised the King of Romos to hold a tournament under the guise of gathering strong warriors to fight the Dark Army. Zamza soon revealed his true colors and trapped the combatants intending to kidnap them, but the efforts of Dai and his party prevented this outcome. Maam in particular would expose a key weakness in Superior Beings by causing damage through overhealing, therefore bypassing their regenrative abilities. Although a powerful fighter under his transformation, Zamza was defeated, yet even in death his actions would tremendously help the project as he sent all the data to his father by teleporting his headband with the information.

Armed with new knowledge in hand, Zaboera was able to find the secret to perfecting Superior Beings by fully transforming a subject into one from the start rather than it being an optional transformation, although for Darklings, this costed them their significantly long lifespan.

Hadlar himself, in an effort to finally defeat Dai and re-obtain Vearn's favor, soon underwent the proper procedure, which made him a perfect Superior Being, vastly augmenting his physical strength, speed, defense and allowing him to use spells, being the first truly successful member of the race to have achieved the project's goals, more than capable of matching the fearsome Dragon Knights in power. In Hadlar's case however, the procedure took a great toll on him as the surgery made the Black Core secretly implanted inside of him to become unstable, therefore affecting his lifespan even more than usual. When said object was removed from him, this was final push for his body to slowly begin to truly die, which pushed Hadlar to seek Dai for one last fight to the death, choosing to either die by the hands of his rival, or then attempt to take Vearn's head on his own. After his death, hadlar's residual ash would ironically save multiple times the life of his old nemesis, Avan, during his duel against Killvearn, by giving him a partial immunity against hellfire.

In the final battle between the armies of humanity and the Dark Army, Zaboera would unveil a new and even more fearsome way to employ the research for his benefit. By using a set of magical orbs into the corpses of the many monsters felled during the battle against the human allied forces beneath Vearn's floating Palace, their bodies would be forcefully fused and become a large grotesque undead monstrosity which Zaboera could pilot for himself from within, thusly avoiding the harmful side-effects of the procedure by not performing it on himself. This menacing abomination, dubbed by Zaboera as a Superior zombie, was furthermore capable of eliminating even more weaknesses: by being composed of dead tissue, techniques like Refractor Fist were ineffective, furthermore the muscles had become incredibly compacted and rigid, easily stopping cutting blows and stabs midway to no effect whatsoever, even having a powerful acid for blood that could easily ruin any normal ordinary weapon. Being an undead creature, it lacked the sensation of pain, all but making it a nigh unstoppable threat; it required the use of Lon Beruk's secret weapon to unleash an attack so devastating it bypassed the monster's defenses, allowing him to defeat it for good, albeit at the cost of the use of Lon Beruk's hands due to the incomplete nature of the weapon he was forced to use.

Soon after, the fleeing, badly injuried Zaboera would be terminated once and for all by Crocodine, all but ensuring the project was effectively defunct by virtue of all its central researchers being felled.

In the prequel story, Zamza and Zaboera can be seen begin the experimentation that would lead to the Superior Being's project, by combining different monsters together, such as fusing Winkies with Heyedras or Mummies and Infernal armours both fused with Madusas. Zamza is also revealed to be the one truly responsible for discovering the process, although his credit was stolen by his father.
