The Sword of Shadows is a greatsword in the Dragon Quest series.

Appearances[]

Dragon Quest XI[]

The Sword of Shadows was created after Mordegon seized with treachery the original Sword of Light, then corrupting it with his dark magic. After using it to pierce the Heart of Yggdrasil and absorb it's everlasting life, Mordegon continues to use the sword as his main weapon during his reign of terror, particularly to destroy Calasmos' body imprisoned inside Erdwin's lantern, and during the first phase of his boss fight. After his first defeat Mordegon will transform himself in a more powerful form known as Mordragon, in the process also transforming the Sword of Shadows into Mordragon's tail.

After defeating Mordegon, the Luminary obtains it in his inventory and can use it in battle. It has an attack bonus of +196 and a parry chance of 3%. Unlike the vast majority of the equipment, it cannot be further upgraded with the Fun-Size Forge.

The sword is needed to progress further in the third act of the story, as it is the only weapon that can break Jasper's barrier during his fight with in the Heart of Yggdrasil. After this fight against Mordegon's Orb of Darkness however, the sword breaks permanently.

Trivia[]

  • As a story point, the items in the inventories of the party excluding the Luminary, will be taken note of and saved once they reach Arboria's cathedral for the first time in act I. At the start of act III all items will be transfered into the Luminary's bag and still remain in his possesion when he travels back in time, this process resulting in the duplication of the items that were originally in the party's inventories, making it possible to duplicate items that otherwise would only exist as unique items, such as Belle's bow. In the Switch version, thanks to the option to replay previous chapters of the story while retaining levels and items, by switching between 2D and 3D mode, this process can also be repeated with items normally avayable only in later parts of the story and for as many times one sees fit, essentially exploiting it to create endless copies of powerful items. However, anticipating this, some items are purposely coded to be impossible to duplicate, with some of them being even banned of being brought back to previous chapters at all; this is the case for all variations of the Sword of Light, including the Sword of Shadows, making it truly impossible to recover the Sword of Shadows after it shatters or make it co-exist with the Super Sword of Light.
