The sword of ruin, also known as the sword of destruction and devil sword, is a powerful sword in the Dragon Quest series. It is frequently one of the most powerful weapons in the game, if not the most powerful, yet that power comes at a price, as the sword is cursed... If equipped, the wielder will occasionally become paralyzed for a turn in battle. The sword features an unusual design of bones and skulls and has an axe head at the tip of the blade.

Appearances[]

Dragon Quest II[]

The sword of ruin has an attack bonus of +105 (+93 in the NES version), the single highest bonus in the game. It could only be equipped by the Prince of Midenhall in the NES version, but in the remakes, the Prince of Cannock can equip it, as well. It can be dropped by both Giganteses and Green dragons and can be sold for 11,250 gold.

Dragon Quest III[]

The sword of ruin has an attack bonus of +105 and has a higher chance of inflicting a critical hit. It can only be equipped by the Hero and Warriors. In the NES version, it can be purchased from Rimuldar for 45,000 gold and sold for 33,750. In all other versions, it can be found in the Craggy Cave and can also be dropped by the Bones of Baramos.

Dragon Quest VI[]

While it is not in the game itself, it appears in Land of Illusion, being summoned by Dhuran, who boasts that it has more power than the Sword of Ramias, but grants the user great power at the cost of being controlled by the sword itself, as seen when Terry wields it and destroys the Harmour who failed to defeat the Hero and his companions. Terry later fights the party with this sword, though Milly's call to him restores his sanity and the sword is destroyed by a Boom spell. However, it is later shown that the Sword survived the spell, due to the skull of the sword not being destroyed and attempts to kill both Terry and Milly, though the Hero finally destroys the sword with the Sword of Ramias.

Dragon Quest VII[]

The sword of ruin has an attack bonus of +110, and can only be equipped by the Hero and Aishe. In the PS1 version, it can be purchased from the Grand Slum's final evolution of the Immigrant Town for 45,000 gold and sold for 22,500 gold. Swords of ruin can also be won as prizes from the Lucky Panel at Buccanham's Casino.

Dragon Quest: Monster Battle Road Series[]

Reappearing from Battle Road II onwards, it can potentially curse players when equipped, just like in the usual Dragon Quest games, which will increase if equipped alongside Thanatos' shield and Hela's armour, though doing so will also grant a 3rd skill in the form of Destruction Falcon Slash.

Skill/Spell Description
Hakai no Ichigeki Deals physical damage to one enemy
Funsai no Ichigeki Deals physical dark element damage to one enemy
Destruction Falcon Slash Damages one enemy twice while potentially landing a critical hit

Dragon Quest Builders[]

Dragon Quest Builders 2[]

It has an attack bonus of +50. Part of a set of cursed equipment, which in turn if you collect them all will complete a secret challenge in the final chapter of the game (Alongside Thanatos' shield and Wailer´s mail, which can be found in the same dungeon) In order to complete the challenge you only need to find them (it isn't needed to equip them).

"An unwieldy weapon with a strange and sinister shape. Attack+50. It emits an ominous aura..."

Taking as inspiration of the infamous glitch from the original release of Dragon Quest II involving the Sword of Ruin and the Falcon blade, by using the Dressing table to change the appearance of an equipped Sword of ruin into that of a Falcon blade, an action that under any other circumstances would be purely cosmetic, will instead transform the Sword of ruin into a Three-starred Falcon blade, the most powerful sword available, and one of the items necessary to complete the Itempedia.
