Tenton is the starting location in Dragon Quest X, and the home to the game's Hero. One of the villages of Astoltia, located on an island on the inner sea of Rendacia, the settlement is destroyed by monsters in the opening cinematic, with the Hero dying in the attack and beginning the journey of reincarnation.

Dragon Quest X[]
Tenton is a small community on a likewise small island, with an architecture centred around wooden houses with straw roofs, and a river lays to the east border. A wooden monument sits in the centre of the village, with the base being made of logs covered with tapestries and the top section being bush with a carving shaped like a winged horse set in the centre. They worship their local village protector, the Galapagod, who wisely answers to their worries after being interpreted by the village elder.
5000 years ago, there existed a great kingdom on the biggest isle in the inland sea of Rendacia, the Great Etene Island, where the Hero's true biological family prospered as the royal family line, until it was attacked by monsters on orders from Kyronos, an eldritch being created from their own hubris. The survivors of the attack migrated elsewhere, and were able to create the humble but prosperous village of Tenton, apparently under the misunderstanding to being the sole survivors of the world, as they belived that the other races were no more. A few years before the start of the story, the infant Hero, flung through time by his family to protect them from Kyronos's attack, landed in the village, and was adopted by a couple; years later, their adopted parents gave birth to another child, and the Hero and said child grew up together in peace, alongside their childhood friend Singh, the grandson of the village elder Tenda.
Over the course of time, the people of Tenton had mostly lost memory of their great past, and furthermore, the number of people actually able to wield the greatest ability of the people of Etene, the power to control time, had dwindled more and more, until the ability was completely lost for the people of Tenton by present time. Nevertheless, fearing said ability, the Demon named Nelgel the Netherlord, under orders from his ally, the Great Demon King Maldragora the Worldbreaker, attacked the village with his forces, completely destroying it, and almost succeeding into wiping out all of its inhabitants. During the attack, the Hero was able to accidentally tap into their power to control time, and flung their sibling into the past to protect them; the Hero themselves however by all means "perished". But their soul did not pass into the afterlife, instead it was given the opportunity to inhabith the recently deceased corpse of a member of one of the other races.
The Hero can return to Tenton later during their adventure, but it is a smoldering wreck filled with monsters. Beginning with version 3.5 of the game, surviving villagers have set out to rebuild the town.
Dragon Quest XI 3DS and Definitive Edition[]
Tenton is the second location in the altar of the undeciphered in the Echo Chamber. The Luminary is sent to a time before the village's destruction, and is informed that the Galapagod has been kidnapped by monsters and taken to Baramos's Lair. Fortunately, Tenda had a vision of the Luminary's coming and informed the villagers to give him the Zoomstone--a rock charged with the Zoom spell that will teleport the great Shelled One once he is found.
