"The Hero's Tutor" (勇者の家庭教師, "Yusha no Kateikyoshi") is the third episode of the 2020 2D and CG animated TV series, Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. It aired on 17 October 2020.
Summary[]
When Dai is playing with the monsters as usual, the monsters suddenly go berserk. Some kind of dark power seems to be affecting the monsters. Sensing the danger, Brass tries to get Dai to leave Dermline Island, but Dai refuses. As Dai and Brass continue to argue, Avan, who trains heroes, and his apprentice, the Mage Popp appear. Avan tells them that the island has been purified by the Glimmer spell, that the Dark Lord has returned, and that he has been sent by the Papnica royal family to raise Dai to become a hero. In order to defeat the Dark Lord who threatens his loved ones, Dai decides to train under Avan. Dai immediately starts training in the Special Hard Course. He is still not very good at magic, but his sword skills show remarkable growth as he absorbs Avan's teachings. Avan invites Pop to join the Special Hard Course, but Popp is put off by the severity of the course and is unwilling to participate. On the second day of training, Avan shows Dai his special move, the Avan Strash. He then told Dai that in order to master the Avan Strash, he would have to learn the Avan Style Sword Technique, which slashes the earth, sea, and sky. On the same day, Dai mastered the rudimentary Earth Slash. On the third day of training, Avan gave Dai the task of fighting himself, who had transformed into a Dragon.

Manga differences[]
- Added the scene with the call to the Dark Army and the monsters transforming
- Explicitly states the small boat is the one Dai's cradle was in and removes the scene of Brass finding Dai as it was already animated and expanded upon in episode 1.
- Added a vision of the Dark Lord with his old design and an army
- The anime directly shows the effects of the Glimmer spell without Popp explaining it before
- Removed Dai imagining the Romos King and Leona against the Dark Army
- Removed the gag of Avan asking Dai to sign a contract for the training
- The Gargoyles are not called birdmen
- Gargoyle A is immediately killed instead of a sword cut delay although he does have a bleeding wound before the coup de grâce anymore. His body is now shown to disintegrate.
- Put Dai's recruitment scene in chronological order instead of flashbacks
- Added a scene of Avan doing a blackboard explanation of the prerequisite techniques to the Avan Strash to Dai
- When Avan states that spells are based on concentration he states it in Japanese instead of the English pronunciation.
- Avan does not transform inside a cave anymore but an open field
- Removed the blackboard magic training about ice spells
