Manga differences[]

  • Removed Hadlar killing fishermen in his introduction, which was moved to be the start of the episode instead of after Avan's transformation. His face is also revealed directly instead of being kept in shadows, possibly because it was shown in the first episode.
  • The action does not take place in a cave.
  • Dai now compares Avan to the green dragon from episode 1, while in the manga he did not met one
  • Avan's does not retain an open wound on his nose from his dragon form. Consequently he does not start wearing a bandage but asks Dai to cast a Crack spell.
  • Removed the shot of Dai using the Wave Slash against a Magus monster.
  • Gomechan now reveals that Popp has been training in secret.
  • Instead of the direct designs of an aged Dragonlord with his staff and the Hero with Erdrick's helmet from the first game, the flashback reuses the sequence from the first episode adapted from chapter 183. Also adds Vearn and his palace sequence from the same episode instead of a shot of Sovereign Rock Castle.
  • Hadlar's belt now has hexagons instead of pentagrams.
  • Hadlar does not comment anymore on Avan's Battle Aura when he gets up to use his Avan Strash
  • The spell Hadlar sends at Dai and Popp is now stated to be a Sizzle while it was unnamed in the manga.
  • Hadlar general attitude has been toned down and none of the characters have a gag reaction with snot.

Trivia[]

  • The spell Mahokator which was an exclusive to the Dai series, (not in any other Dragon Quest games) got a localization name for the Crunchyroll/Hulu English subtitled called "Glimmer".
  • Demon King Vearn got changed to Dark King Vearn in the Crunchyroll/Hulu English subtitled localization by Square Enix.
