The Pothold is a recurring location/dungeon in the Dragon Quest series.
Appearances[]
Dragon Quest V[]
Located west of Stockenbarrel, and northwest of Mostroferrato and its accompanying La Guardia watchtower, it is where Bjørn the Behemoose is sealed by Rodolfo Briscoletti years prior to the events of the game and can't be entered until the Hero acquired the Magic Key. Later in Generation 3, Bjorn frees himself and begins marching to Mostroferrato to enact his vengeance on Rodolfo's descendant Rodrigo Briscoletti, forcing the Hero to fight the Behemoose. In the postgame, the Hero can visit the shrine and recruit Bjorn's reincarnation Rebjørn to the party after they recruited Starkers.

Dragon Quest VII[]
Appearing as a shrine in Villa Priores, it is the entrance to the Multipleximus Maximus where Macho Picchu is sealed and the Cirrus Surplice needed to awaken the Wind Spirit is located.
Dragon Quest IX[]
Known as the Quarantomb, it is a dungeon northwest of Coffinwell where the Ragin' Contagion was sealed prior to the earthquake shattering its jar and releasing it, causing its illness to infect the citizens once more. The Hero and Dr. Phlegming venture into the location to seal the Contagion once again. The Ragin' Contagion fights the Hero to ensure its illness was still present, but loses and is sealed by Phlegming afterwards. Despite the Contagion being sealed back into its jar prison, its illness kills Catarrhina just after they returned to Coffinwell, causing Phlegming to lock himself in isolation once more. Eventually, it's revealed that the Contagion also sealed an amnesiac ghost who was once the King of Coffinwell.

Etymology[]
The dungeon's name is a play on the words "quarantine" and "tomb".
Trivia[]
- The setting of the Quarantomb in Dragon Quest IX seems to be a play on the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, which had the Terracotta Army that were the origin of the Earthenwarrior monsters.
- The heavy use of mercury in the Mausoleum may be the cause why Metal Slimes are set to be found in this dungeon.
