Tortured soul is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series.
Characteristics[]
In its debut in Dragon Quest VIII, the tortured soul is the third boss of the game and the former and last abbot of the Ruined Abbey. Not much information is given about the Tortured Soul or the Ruined Abbey, with the exception of that the Goddess was seemingly keeping him from entering the Heavens and that the abbey in which he resided was broken by a deathly plague that took the lives of everyone living inside of it.
While fighting this boss, never go for his “backup.” If he is to be defeated first, then his lackeys will flee the battle before any other attacks can be considered.
In later games, however, they are normal enemies that can put up a fight if the player is underleveled or lacking the proper equipment.

In its debut game, the tortured soul is the cursed spirit of the last abbot of the Ruined Abbey, who, along with everyone else in the abbey, was killed by a deadly plague. He is encountered by the Hero's party at the end of the Ruined Abbey, where he angrily asks the Goddess why he has to keep suffering, even in death. He then fights the party in order to make them feel the agony that he had to endure, but is defeated. Afterwards, his suffering is finally over with his spirit ascending to the heavens.
