The Underkeep, or the Underground Palace, is a location in both The Adventure of Dai and Dragon Quest VI.

Underground Palace
In Dai's world, the Underground Palace is a castle located inside a Papnica volcano, where Dark Lord Hadlar resided 15 years ago, and lauched his attacks against the human kingdoms, before he was conquered by Avan's party. The Palace has also a Colosseum, as Hadlar enjoyed pitting captive humans against monsters for his amusement.
The Hell Gate leading to hadlar was guarded by the Skeleton swordsman Bartos, but he was defeated by the hero Avan. Showing mercy towards the undead warrior, as Avan had correctly guessed that he had a family, Bartos begged Avan to take care of his adoptive son, Hyunckel, after he, due to Hadlar's defeat, had disappeared. However, after Hadlar defeat, much to Bartos's shock, he had not disappeared, as Hadlar had survived, revived by Vearn. In revenge for his soft heart, Hadlar murdered Bartos as punishment, which lead the young Hyunckel to misunderstand, and think that Avan had done the deed.
Years later, the now adult Hyunckel, as he was raised there as a child, after rising up as a Legion Commander, re-located his Undead Legion in the old Underground Palace, from which he directed his attacks against the Papnica kingdom. He eventually was defeated by Dai's party and saw the errors of his ways, but the volcano was reignited by Flazzard, destroying the location and its in-occupants. Dai and his friends only barely managed to survive thanks to Hyunckel's sacrifice, who in turn also managed to barely escape death thanks to the intervention of Crocodine, who had survived their previous clash.
