Velzar is a character in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai and its animated adaptations. He is the King of the Abyss and the last intelligent dragon of the Underworld who is tremendously powerful, just as much his friendly rival the Dark King Vearn himself.
Appearance[]
Velzar dons a typical dragon-like appearance, with red skin, glowing red eyes, black horns and large wings.
Personality[]
Velzar is an atrocious sadist like Vearn and doesn't care about destroying an entire contient full of his people just to get rid of Baran. However, he is also less strategic than Vearn and prefers to act before thinking it through. Besides the aforementioned action, he also lets Killvearn gloat and try to blow up the Surface World immediately in front of the heroes instead of laying low, an act that costs him Killvearn and his only tool to do something meaningful. He also still holds a grudge against Baran for defeating him years ago.
Biography[]
Background[]
Velzar is the last intelligent dragon and Vearn's arch-rival for millennia, until Vearn suggested a wager in which whoever successfully conquered the Surface World first would win and thus gain the other's loyalty. Velzar later sent the Reaper Killvearn as a "truce gift", but in truth to kill Vearn (hence his name) at the first opportunity. Vearn immediately figured this out and accepted the challenge. Knowing that Vearn wanted to destroy the Surface World as opposed to taking over it, Velzar went hasty with his plan and attempted to take it over first, but h and his troops were defeated by the Dragon Knight, Baran while Hadlar attacked the surface. After his defeat, he was turned to stone after his defeat by Zenithian people. However, his servant Killvearn still acts on his behalf as Vearn's executioner.
Destiny Arc[]
When Hyunckel asks why Baran hates humanity, Larhart recounts Baran's story to him, including his victory over Velzar.
Blood Fight Arc[]
After Vearn seemingly wins, Velzar casts an astral projection and congratulates him, and Vearn explains their history together to Popp. Velzar disappears out of shame when Vearn suggests invading Heaven to free him when the Surface World is gone.
Flash of Light Arc[]
Velzar later sees Vearn trying to turn himself into his Sovereign Supreme form to match Dai's Super Dragonoid form, and wonders if Dai is really that powerful so as to make Vearn resorts to such a desperate solution. After Vearn's defeat, Killvearn appears and attempts to kill all life on the Surface World so Velzar can take it over, only for Maam to kill him and Dai to bring the puppet with the Black Core out of the orbit, saving the Surface World and leaving Velzar trapped forever with no way to do anything meaningful ever again.
Abilities[]
As the King of the Abyss, Velzar is an incredibly powerful evil dragon who rivals out of the Dark King Vearn himself. Demonstrate to his frightening dark power, he single-handedly defeated the powerful Lightning Dragon Vorikus in a "duel of the true dragons" and ultimately won victorious.
