Whipping Boy is a recurring skill in the Dragon Quest series.

Appearances[]

Dragon Quest III HD-2D[]

Only appearing in the HD-2D Remake, it is learned by Warriors at level 3, and costs 1 MP to use for the first time since Dragon Quest Rivals.

Dragon Quest IX[]

Making its debut, it can be learned by investing 8 skill points in the Warrior's Courage skill tree. The character using this skill will take physical damage intended for the character being covered. This skill is required for quest #106. It is very useful if there are low-level party members and a high-level warrior as warriors have very high defence. It costs 0 MP to use, and is also used by Cheeky tikis, Teaky masks, Grim grinners, Bad karmours, and Alarmours.

Dragon Quest X[]

Acting the same as in IX, it is learned by investing 8 points invested into the Warrior's Courage skill tree once again and is generally used only for quests to change to Paladin, but it can be very useful depending on how you use it, with the skill itself being upgraded with Whipping Joy to reduce damage after investing 110 skill skill points and the Whipping Ploy Master Orb to counter enemy attacks, in addition to being buffed by investing 150 skill points into the Shield skill tree from 6.2 onwards, which allows the player in the Warrior vocation to still act while protecting allies and cutting damage taken from enemy attacks and spells by 50%. It costs 0 MP to use once again and is also used by Death Soldier Gatarian and Jia Wall in battle to protect Specter King Gismeyer and Jialeone from enemies, as well as the Bad Karmours summoned by Hootingham-Gore once again. In the Offline version of the game, it is learned by the Hero in the Warrior vocation at level 4 and investing 7 skill points into Mjoll's Powerful skill tree, in addition to being used by Rascal when he temporarily fights alongside the party.

Dragon Quest XI[]

Acting the same as in its previous appearances, it is learned by Sylvando when he invests 10 skill points in the Chivalry Character Builder, which is unlocked after Tweedledoom and Tweedledeath's defeats and can be upgraded with Whipping Joy to reduce damage and Whipping Ploy to counter enemy attacks, just like in X. It costs 0 MP to use once again, and is also used by the King squid, Tentacular, and Squidzilla's left and right tentacles to protect the main monsters themselves. The Nincompoop Knight can also use this skill during the In Search of Hope side story.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light[]

Learned by Jörmun at level 13 and already learned by the newly reincarnated Crocodine when he is recruited, it acts differently from previous appearances, raising their slash defence by 1 level and healing 1 ally at the start of the turn.

Dragon Quest Tact[]

Known as Cover in this game, it acts the same as in previous appearances and is already learned by Leery louts, Scarlet scorpions, Metal dragon slimes, Dragurns, Visor kaisers, Glacial golems, and Lizzie when they are recruited, costing 11 MP to use, while upgrading the skill reduces MP cost. It is also one of Mason's abilities when summoned by the Hero's Call Ally skill, and one of Potbelly's abilities when summoned with Eight's Monster Mia skill.
