Whips are recurring type of weapon in the Dragon Quest series. They are unusual in that they target a group of enemies (with diminishing returns) (starting with Dragon Quest V). A notable whip is the Gringham whip, which can target all enemies. Unfortunately, whips can only score a critical hit on the first enemy struck.
Depending of the title, Whips can either be wielded with two hands, or with just one, thusly making it possible to equip a Shield in the off hand.

First introduced in this game, whips could be used by the Hero/Heroine, Mages, Jesters, Sages and Thieves. They include:

Jessica can equip whips in all versions of the game, as can Red in the 3DS remake. As with the other weapon types, the critical hit ratio will improve from 1/64 to 1/32 once enough skill points are invested. Since they are used with just one hand, it is possible to equip a Shield in the off hand.

Whips can be used by the mage, minstrel, and luminary vocations. However, once a character fully masters the Whip skill, they can freely use whips with any vocation.

Whips can be equipped by Veronica and Sylvando. Following the events of the Act 2 of the story, Serena also become able to equip whips, however she loses this ability once the story reaches its Act 3.
